Women's Hoops Updates
Olympians ...
Three-time Olympic gold medalist as a player and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team assistant coach Dawn Staley will return to the University of Virginia grounds, where she honed her hoops skills in college, to give valedictory address May 16 at 11 a.m. on the Lawn ... Olympic gold medalists Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles and their former LSU teammate Quianna Chaney are enjoying the perks of living and playing overseas ... Swin Cash underwent back surgery yesterday. She made a video announcement to her fans on her personal site and it's all over the news in Seattle. It would seem the surgery was successful and we all wish Swin a speedy recovery! ... WNBA players worried about cost, rostser cuts.
Additional USA Baskteball Alums:
In the biggest news of the day, Courtney Paris, the 2009 Big 12 Player of the Year, is putting her money where her mouth is. She stated that she'll return her scholarship money to the University of Oklahoma if the Sooners don't win a national championship this season. When she arrived at OU four years ago Courtney had high hopes for the Sooners and has one final shot at her goal. Along the way she's shattered too many NCAA, Big 12 and OU records to list on a single page, she's helped her teams capture Big 12 titles, but the one that has eluded Courtney is the one she wants most. Can the Sooners do it this year? Can they get past UConn, Maryland, Stanford and other top teams? Or will Courtney take out a loan to repay OU? That's the $64,000 question that will be answered four weeks from now ... Doug Bruno gets a lesson in NCAA bracketing ... Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver helped Maryland clinch the ACC regular season and tournament crowns and Maryland fans are prepping for the road to another Final Four ...

Sylvia Fowles Honing Her Game in Russia
Sylvia Fowles is a presence under the basket for USA Basketball and the Chicago Sky. She's a unique player the likes haven't been seen since Katrina McClain ruled the backboard. And here's the scary part: she keeps getting better. Silky Syl is working on her game in Russia this season (she had 27 points and 11 rebounds today in EuroLeague Sweet Sixteen action) and Spartak Moscow Region has hired Alex Troxel to help work on improving her post game.
"The main thing we're working on is making her more effective," Troxel told the Chicago Tribune. "Reading defenses, catching the ball off the block and going to work, backing a girl down. She's so talented and can do so many things we almost needed to simplify her game."
What happenes if Fowles, who came off the bench to average U.S. Olympic team-highs of 13.4 ppg. and 8.4 rpg., while shooting 64.3 percent from the field, comes back even better than she was a year ago? Opponents next season should be afraid of that answer. Very afraid.
